My Escape to Paradise: A Solo Adventure in Antigua

February 28, 2023

Written by Omalicha

I needed a break from the Canadian snow, so I packed my duffle and embarked on a solo trip to Antigua. I chose Antigua as my destination because of its reputation as one of the warmest places to visit in February. I also wanted to experience a new culture and relax on a beautiful beach. And boy, did Antigua exceed my expectations!

Beach Bliss: Exploring Antigua's Pristine Coastline

One of my favorite things about Antigua was that the beaches were open to the public and free. I particularly loved Darkwood Beach, which had a fantastic vibe that matched my personality. The water was clear blue and calm, and I enjoyed reading while listening to music. I also witnessed a stunning sunset.

My second favorite beach was Pigeon Point Beach, which had equally beautiful water but a different vibe. I noticed that more locals visited this beach, and it was popular for sailing and water sports such as wing foil surfing. The small restaurant on the beach served the strongest and yummiest rum punch that I have ever tasted.

Exciting Activities to Explore Beyond the Beach

I always love hitting the beach, but if you’re in the mood for something different, here are some activities I recommend:

Day Time Vibes

  • English Harbour: This area has a great atmosphere with plenty of places to walk around, dine at, and learn about the local history and culture.

  • The National Dockyard Museum

  • St. John's: A great spot for shopping and sightseeing, with lots of interesting landmarks to explore.

  • The Rain Forest: Fig Tree Drive, Obama mount, so much to see on the way.

Night Time Vibes

  • Club House: Yummy Sushi. Trivia nights on Wednesdays.

  • Cloggy’s Bar: Thursday nights from 8pm to midnight are the best times to check out this spot, where the age range is 18 and up. And don't worry, you won't be the oldest one there!

  • Shirley's Heights: I highly recommend checking out this spot for some great vibes and live music. Thursdays are good, but Sundays are the best!

Juda Toast: rum-soaked & butter fried whole loaf bread.

Locavore: chop-up & okra &cheese omelet.

Unforgettable Antiguan Hospitality: A Solo Traveler's Perspective

What made Antigua truly special for me were the people. They were generally friendly, and I never felt lonely despite traveling alone. The food was also da bomb! While taxis were a bit pricy, I’d recommend renting a car for greater convenience. Note that since they drive on the left in Antigua, you would love to have a car with the steering wheel on the right next time. Drop a comment if you need a hookup for car rental.

Overall, I had an amazing time in Antigua and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm and welcoming destination. Although, I have a rule of always trying to visit a new country, I might make an exception to revisit paradise. And next time, I plan to bring my friends along for the adventure.

Have you been on an amazing out of country solo trip, and where did you go?
